#1: Locate the Courthouse
While this might seem fairly obvious, the last thing you want is to be stressed out and nervous because you can’t remember how to get to the courthouse. Before your court date arrives, you need to figure out how long it will take you to get to the courthouse. You should also look at the parking situation so you can account for the time it will take to walk from your car to the courtroom.
#2: Show Up On Time
It’s one thing to be late to a dinner with friends or family, it is a completely different matter to be tardy to your court hearing. If you know that you tend to be late when you have to get somewhere, you need to immediately change your ways and do everything you can to ensure you show up to court on time. Treat your court date like a job interview and show up early.
#3: Anticipate Spending Your Day in Court
Don’t schedule any other appointments on your court date. You will likely have to spend a solid amount of time in the courtroom where you won’t be allowed to use your cell phone, so it’s best to just clear your schedule for the day.
#4: Dress Your Best
A courtroom is a professional environment, so leave your unique fashion styles in the closet and choose an appropriate outfit that doesn’t draw any unnecessary or negative attention to yourself.
#5: Bring All Important Documents
Your attorney will tell you which document you need to bring with you to court, but at the very least, make sure you bring your ID so you can enter the courthouse. If you don’t have an ID, your attorney can make arrangements with the court. Keep all of your important documents in a place that is easy to find, because once you enter the courtroom, you likely won’t be able to leave if you forget something.
